YouTube Just Made Your Selfies Weirder (and Smarter): YouTube is rolling out AI-powered tools that let Shorts creators turn static images into zooming, dancing, animated videos because apparently still photos are too quiet. It's all powered by Google’s Veo 2 model and wrapped in a shiny new hub called AI Playground. U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand get first dibs everyone else, get in line.

Google Launches AI-Powered Virtual Try-On for Shoppers: Google just rolled out a new AI feature that lets users upload a full-body photo to see how clothes look on their own virtual body not just on models. The tool, live now in the U.S., is part of a broader push into personalized shopping, with price alerts and an upcoming generative AI style explorer also on the way.

Google Photos Adds AI Magic to Your Memories: Google Photos is getting a creative AI boost, letting users turn snapshots into six-second videos or remix them into styles like anime, 3D, and sketches all from a new “Create” tab rolling out in August. With over 1.5 billion users, this update puts generative AI in the hands of the masses while giving Google valuable feedback to fine-tune its tools.

AI Action Plan

Trump Just Banned “Woke AI” from Federal Use

Trump signed an executive order banning any AI tech that isn’t “ideologically neutral” from federal use. If a model includes anything related to DEI, race, gender, or so-called “partisan bias,” it’s out.

This comes after U.S. officials confirmed that Chinese AI models are quietly reinforcing government-approved narratives. The new order is Trump’s attempt to fight back with his own version of “neutrality” but it’s already raising red flags.

What just happened:

  • The order is real and active. It directs agencies like the Office of Management and Budget and General Services to create compliance guidelines for all government vendors and departments.

  • The government will only use “neutral” AI. But definitions of “neutral” and “truth-seeking” are vague and politically loaded raising concerns about selective censorship.

  • This shift is being justified as a counter to China. U.S. officials recently confirmed that Chinese AI tools avoid criticizing the Communist Party. The U.S. is using that as a warning and a reason to push for its own version of AI “alignment.”

What it actually means:

  • Startups chasing federal contracts may self-censor. With billions in government money on the line, AI companies may start shaping model outputs, datasets, or documentation to match political expectations not just accuracy.

  • There’s no clear way to define “neutral.” Climate change? Gender identity? Racial disparities? These are all fact-based topics that could be seen as biased, depending on interpretation which means companies are navigating in the dark.

  • “Woke AI” is now a political weapon. The language used in the order turns DEI into a disqualifier. That could block tools built to promote inclusivity or reflect marginalized perspectives even if they’re accurate or useful.

  • This isn’t just culture war posturing. xAI (Elon Musk’s firm) has already secured contracts and been added to the federal vendor list. Its chatbot Grok has a reputation for “anti-woke” answers and controversial takes and may now be the blueprint for what acceptable AI looks like.

The concern:

This opens the door to political influence over AI outputs not through law, but through funding pressure.Startups may feel forced to reshape how their models talk about race, gender, history, or equity just to stay in the game.

And once models are trained to reflect one viewpoint, untraining them isn’t easy.

This isn’t just about keeping bias out of AI it’s about deciding which biases are acceptable. And right now, that decision is being driven more by politics than by science.
