AI Chatbots Move Into Holiday Shopping: OpenAI and Perplexity both unveiled new AI-powered shopping tools designed to help users research and narrow down purchases directly inside their chatbots. While the features look similar on the surface, experts say niche AI shopping startups still have an edge because they train on specialized, higher-quality datasets that general-purpose models can’t match. Still, OpenAI and Perplexity have major advantages: massive user bases and partnerships with Shopify and PayPal that allow in-chat checkout. As AI-assisted shopping surges this season, the real winners may be the tools that best understand consumers’ unique buying decisions.

AWS Commits $50B to Supercharge Government AI Infrastructure: Amazon Web Services announced a $50 billion plan to build out new, government-focused AI computing infrastructure across the U.S., aiming to give federal agencies far more power and flexibility for advanced AI workloads. The project will add 1.3 gigawatts of compute and expand access to services like SageMaker, Bedrock, and Anthropic’s Claude, with construction expected to begin in 2026. AWS says the investment will remove long-standing barriers that have limited agencies’ ability to adopt AI at scale. The announcement comes as major tech companies aggressively court U.S. government partnerships through low-cost access to their enterprise AI tools.

Anthropic Unveils Opus 4.5 With Major Performance and Memory Upgrades: Anthropic released Opus 4.5, its newest flagship model, delivering top-tier results across coding, tool-use, and problem-solving benchmarks including becoming the first model to break 80% on SWE-Bench verified. The update also brings major memory improvements and an “endless chat” feature that lets conversations continue seamlessly as the model compresses context on its own. Alongside the launch, Anthropic is rolling out its Claude for Chrome and Claude for Excel tools to more users as it positions Opus 4.5 to compete with GPT-5.1 and Gemini 3.

Nvidia pushed back hard this week after investors worried that Google’s rapidly improving AI chips could threaten its dominance. The company made it clear: yes, Google is making big moves, but Nvidia still controls the only platform that can run every major AI model, anywhere, at scale. Shares dipped after reports that Meta might begin using Google’s TPUs, but Nvidia brushed off the pressure, arguing that its Blackwell chips offer more power and flexibility than single-purpose ASIC designs like TPUs. With more than 90% market share in AI chips and rising demand driven by scaling laws, Nvidia says competition doesn’t weaken its position, it proves how big the AI race is becoming.
