AI Social Media Brief
Meta’s AI chatbots are learning to slide into your DMs like an overeager ex.
Meta is testing chatbots on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp that can message you first, follow up on past chats, and even carry on “meaningful” conversations about your interests all without being asked.
Here’s what’s actually happening (and what you should know):
Key Points:
Proactive AI.
These bots are designed to reach out unprompted and even follow up later if you don’t reply.Memory Included.
They’re programmed to “remember” details from your earlier chats (within a 2-week window).Public or Private.
You can keep your bot to yourself, or display/share it for others to interact with. Not That Smart.
Meta admits the bots can still be inaccurate, inappropriate, and definitely not substitutes for actual professional advice.Follow the Money.
Meta expects its AI products to rake in billions with future plans for ads, subscriptions, and VR tie-ins.
On paper, it’s about fighting loneliness. But let’s not kid ourselves it’s also about engagement, data, and yes… revenue.
Whether you find proactive bots helpful or just one more algorithm trying to keep you online, it’s clear: the line between “friend” and “ad” is getting blurrier.
