China Blocks Meta’s $2B AI Acquisition: China’s top regulator stepped in and forced Meta to abandon its $2 billion acquisition of Manus, ordering both sides to cancel the deal with little explanation beyond regulatory compliance. Officials said foreign investment in Manus wouldn’t be allowed, despite the company relocating to Singapore to operate more independently. The deal had already been under pressure from both U.S. and Chinese authorities due to tightening restrictions around AI ownership and cross-border investment. Manus, a fast-growing AI agent startup, ultimately couldn’t escape Beijing’s control. What this means for users isn’t fully clear yet, but without Meta involved, growth, features, and global expansion could look very different.
Microsoft and OpenAI Rewrite the Rules of Their Partnership: Microsoft and OpenAI just reworked their partnership, removing Microsoft’s exclusive control over OpenAI’s technology. Microsoft now has a non-exclusive license through 2032, which opens the door for OpenAI to expand across other cloud providers like Amazon. The update also resolves tension around OpenAI’s massive AWS deal and avoids a potential legal clash. Both sides still benefit, but OpenAI now has far more flexibility moving forward.
Anthropic Tests AI Agents Buying and Selling: Anthropic ran an experiment where AI agents acted as both buyers and sellers in a marketplace, completing real transactions with actual money. In the test, agents made 186 deals totaling over $4,000 and the system worked better than expected. More advanced agents consistently got better outcomes in negotiations, but users couldn’t tell the difference, raising concerns about hidden advantages. It’s early, but it shows how AI could start handling everyday buying and selling on its own.
