Co-CEO Ted Sarandos called AI “an incredible opportunity” for creators, helping with everything from pre-visualization to advanced effects once reserved for blockbuster budgets. Beyond production, Netflix is also baking AI into search, personalization, and even interactive ads set to debut later this year.
Perplexity Bets Big on India With Airtel Deal: Perplexity is making waves in India, striking an exclusive deal with telecom giant Airtel to offer free Pro subscriptions to 360 million users and positioning itself as a serious contender to OpenAI. Its user growth in India has been explosive with downloads and monthly active users surging over 600% year-over-year but monetization remains its biggest hurdle. AI Legal Brief
Meta Skips the EU’s AI Party and Throws Shade on the Way Out
In classic Meta fashion, the company declined to sign the EU’s new voluntary code of practice for general-purpose AI just weeks before the bloc’s landmark AI Act begins enforcement. Meta’s global affairs chief, Joel Kaplan, didn’t mince words, calling the EU’s approach “overreach” and warning it would “throttle” innovation and hurt European companies building on these models.
The EU’s code, a voluntary framework meant to help companies prepare for compliance, asks developers to regularly document and update their AI systems, avoid pirated content, and honor creators’ requests to opt out of training datasets. According to Meta, these requirements introduce “legal uncertainties” and go “far beyond” the intended scope of the AI Act.
Other tech heavyweights like Alphabet, Microsoft, and Mistral have also voiced concerns and lobbied for delays, but the European Commission hasn’t budged. On Friday, the EU doubled down, releasing additional guidelines and confirming its August 2 timeline for rules covering general-purpose AI models deemed “systemic risk.” Companies already on the market with such models will have until August 2027 to fully comply.
So what’s the takeaway? Meta thinks Europe is making AI innovation too hard. Europe thinks Meta and others need to play by the rules. And the rest of us are left watching the world’s biggest regulatory showdown unfold one LinkedIn post at a time.
