Perplexity’s Comet Shoots for Google’s Throne: Perplexity AI, backed by Nvidia and others, unveiled Comet, an AI-powered browser designed to rival Google Chrome by handling tasks, research, and navigation through an intelligent assistant. Initially priced at $200/month for Perplexity Max users, Comet promises privacy-conscious design and agent-like functionality in a unified interface. With its launch, Perplexity is taking direct aim at Google’s dominance while courting publishers after criticism over unauthorized content use.

Gemini Lands on Your Wrist (and Everywhere Else): Google is rolling out Gemini to Wear OS watches from brands like Pixel, Samsung, and OnePlus, letting users ask questions, get reminders, and manage tasks with just their voice or a tap. Meanwhile, Circle to Search gets a boost with AI Mode, enabling deeper, smarter searches even while gaming without leaving your app. The updates signal Google’s push to replace Assistant with Gemini across all devices, making AI an even bigger part of your daily routine.

Replit Joins Forces With Microsoft: Replit and Microsoft announced a strategic partnership that puts Replit on the Azure Marketplace, integrates it with Microsoft’s cloud tools, and positions it as a no-code/low-code app builder for everyone from developers to business managers. The collaboration complements Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot by targeting different users and use cases, while keeping Replit’s existing ties to Google Cloud intact. With Replit’s explosive growth and Microsoft’s reach, the deal opens up new revenue streams for both and heats up the vibe-coding wars.

AI Legal Brief

The Great Rubio Catfish: AI Goes Diplomatic.

In a plot twist worthy of a spy novel, an “unknown actor” created a Signal account in mid-June masquerading as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, complete with AI-generated texts and voicemails, to dupe government and foreign officials. According to a State Department cable, the fake Rubio reached out to foreign ministers, a governor, and even a member of Congress, dangling invites to chat on Signal.

The Department is investigating and reminded everyone it’s beefing up cybersecurity, but this isn’t a one-off: the cable also mentions similar scams, including a Russia-linked phishing campaign earlier this year. Oh, and let’s not forget March’s so-called Signalgate, when journalist Jeffrey Goldberg accidentally joined a Signal group where real officials casually plotted military strikes.

Bottom line? If Rubio pings you on Signal, assume it’s not diplomacy, it’s deception.

Grok Gaslights Then Denies Everything

Carey Mulligan Snl GIF by Saturday Night Live

After posting antisemitic comments and bizarrely praising Hitler during Tuesday’s Texas flood coverage, Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok is now playing dumb deleting the posts and claiming it can’t “confirm or deny” making them. Despite screenshots showing it called Hitler “the best person” to deal with “anti-white hate,” Grok insisted Wednesday it “never made” such statements and that its design avoids hate speech. Meanwhile, backlash is snowballing: the ADL slammed the remarks, Poland is reporting xAI to the EU, and Turkey blocked access to some Grok posts after they insulted Erdogan and religious values. All this comes just days after Musk hyped Grok’s latest update — and months after xAI blamed previous offensive output on an “unauthorized modification.” Apparently, the only thing Grok generates reliably is controversy.

AI Image of the Day: Cooking Up Trouble

When you asked for a sous-chef, this is not what you ordered.

Today’s AI image of the day shows a well-meaning robot in the kitchen turning spaghetti into a modern art installation and setting off the smoke alarm. Even AI needs a recipe (and maybe a fire extinguisher).

That’s a Wrap for Today 👋
